President Joe Biden just announced that all federal employees and contractors are now required to receive a COVID-19 immunization.
Biden is set to reveal the next stage in a speech later this week when he will explain a new approach to COVID-19 that his administration is pursuing. He is also expected to turn the pressure up on those who have not yet required vaccinations for their employees.
The President outlined his plan which involves signing an executive order giving federal workers no choice but to be vaccinated.
Biden will also order the same standard to be extended to employees of contractors who do business with the federal government. This includes the Department of Defense, the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Indian Health Service, and the National Institute of Health.
The White House estimates this to cover about 2.5 million people.
Biden’s declaration is in stark contrast to the action he took earlier this year, in which he allowed staff the option of submitting themselves to regular testing instead of receiving a vaccine.
White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki gave a hint of what to expect from the President’s new approach to COVID-19. When asked about the impact of Biden’s new health-care proposal on Americans, Psaki said, “It depends on whether you’re vaccinated or not.”
“There are — there are six new — there are six steps the President is announcing. There will be new components, as I noted and you noted. Some of that will be related to access to testing. Some will be related to mandates. Some will be related to how we ensure kids are protected in schools,” Psaki continued. “And we’ll have more — we’ll preview more tomorrow as all the pieces are finalized. But there will be new components that, sure, will of course impact people across the country. But we’re also all working together to get the virus under control, to return to our normal lives. And I know many people, I’m sure, are looking forward to hearing what the President has to say.”
It has already been established that the federal government will require their employees to receive vaccines, now the United States military has declared that all servicemen in the United States are required to acquire the COVID-19 vaccine.
