In an interview with Yahoo Finance set to air on Monday, former President Donald Trump said that he does not think Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis will run against him in 2024 adding that if DeSantis did run that he would “beat him”
“If I faced him, I’d beat him like I would beat everyone else,” Trump said during the interview with “I think that most people would drop out, I think he would drop out.”
Trump has repeatedly hinted at a third presidential bid in 2024, and recent polls have shown him to be in the lead with DeSantis in second place. A Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) poll in July showed Trump with roughly 80% support and DeSantis at 21%.
DeSantis has maintained that he is not considering a presidential bid, even telling Fox News’ Sean Hannity Thursday that he was “not considering anything beyond doing my job.” The first-term governor said that he is running for re-election in Florida in the 2022 election when he will face several Democratic challengers.
In July, Trump said that he’d already decided on his plans for 2024, hinting at a presidential bid but not confirming it. Trump along with his political action committee has continued fundraising, and he has said that he will use his clout with GOP voters ahead of the 2022 midterms.
Though polls have shown Trump to be the early Republican frontrunner, one poll conducted by Quinnipiac University in August showed that 60% of Americans thought another Trump candidacy would not be good for the country.
