Biden Halts Wall Construction But Asks Republicans To Support Border Security

During a speech before a joint session of Congress, President Biden addressed one of his administration’s biggest flaws in an effort to pull Republican support to his side on the issue of border security.

Biden received a lot of backlash from the GOP for his decision to move away from strict border policies the Trump administration had put into place. A decision that caused people to swarm the southern border in record numbers.

Now Biden is calling on Republicans for support in passing an immigration bill that promises to provide resources for security even though he just halted all construction of the border wall put up by Trump.

“If you believe we need to secure the border, pass it because it has a lot of money for high tech border security,” Biden said in his speech.

A fact sheet about the bill that the White House circulated on Biden’s first day in office said it would authorize funding for the homeland security secretary to “to develop and implement a plan to deploy technology to expedite screening and enhance the ability to identify narcotics and other contraband at every land, air, and seaport of entry.”

This technology includes scanners that would screen private and commercial vehicles crossing at ports of entry and rail crossings.

The fact sheet also said the bill would authorize the use of “flexible solutions and technologies” to secure the border between ports of entry.

One of the first things Biden did when taking office was to reverse Trump’s immigration policies by signing an order that would stop the construction of the border wall. However, The Washington Times recently reported that Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas may consider restarting construction to fill the empty spaces left in the wall.
