Oreo Cookie released an ad on Monday that encourages a young man coming out as gay to his family.
“Coming out doesn’t happen just once. It’s a journey that needs love and courage every step of the way. Share our new film and let someone know you’re their #LifelongAlly,” the ad begins.
The ad is co-sponsored by PFLAG, an organization that encourages families to embrace their LGBT family members.
The ad opens with a young man sitting with his family in the kitchen. He has already come out to them and they are supportive of him, but the young man is anxious about telling his grandmother, who will be visiting soon.
The young man is going over a letter he had written to prepare for this moment, but he stutters and is comforted by his mother. “I think you’re ready,” his mother says to him.
His sister then eats an oreo and nervously runs away from the table before grandmother gets there.
The young man reads a note from his mother that said, “she might be my mother, but you are still my son.”
The door opens and the boy smiles, ready to reveal his true nature to his grandmother.
