Police arrested a person of interest in the fatal Highland Park July 4 shooting that left at least six dead and dozens injured on Monday evening.
Robert Crimo III, 22, is believed to have fired at parade-goers from a rooftop in Highland Park, Illinois around 10:00 a.m. on Monday. He was arrested after a brief pursuit and is being questioned by the FBI.
Crimo, who also goes by the rapper name “Awake,” was identified after his DNA was found on a rifle that was left behind at the scene of the shooting. He was dressed as a woman at one point during the attack.
Crimo had made extremely disturbing posts on his social media prior to the incident, with his latest YouTube music video depicting a school shooting. His uncle, Paul Crimo said “there were no signs that I saw that would make him do this,” but noted that “he’s a quiet kid. He’s usually on his own. He’s a lonely, quiet person. He keeps everything to himself.”
Police identified Crimo as a person of interest just hours after the incident, and SWAT members went to his house which is located less than a mile from where the shooting took place.
Crimo was spotted by a police officer at 6:30 p.m. and following a brief pursuit he was arrested “without incident.”
