A young boy was snatched up by a leopard last week in India and his mother chased the animal until the child was let go. The unidentified boy, estimated to be a 5-year-old, was with his mother and siblings when the leopard came towards them.

The boy’s mother, Kiran Baiga, immediately started chasing and screaming at the leopard when it snatched her son.

Baiga and her family live in the village of Badi Jhiriya, which is known for its wildlife sanctuary where people live with free-roaming animals.
Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh Shivraj Singh Chouhan tweeted on Tuesday that the mother chased the leopard for over half a mile.

“This courage to face death is a striking form of motherliness. Congratulations to the mother Mrs. Kiran Baiga on behalf of the people of the state,” Singh said.

Y P Singh, field director of the Sanjay-Dubri National Park and Tiger Reserve, recalled the incident.

“The lady was sitting in her hut with her children when the leopard came,” Singh said. “It took the child and started to run away when the lady chased him, screaming, and more people showed up, so the leopard let go of the child and ran away.”

“He wasn’t very injured but the leopard’s teeth had sunk into him. He was admitted to a hospital and he is completely fine now,” Singh said.

Thankfully the boy suffered only minor physical injuries and is expected to fully recover.
