There Could Be A Round Of Stimulus Checks Coming In These States

California, Kansas, and Minnesota are among the states that have proposed handing taxpayers refund checks worth several hundred dollars. Many Republican lawmakers, for example, argue that the checks won't go far enough to make a difference in the long term due to the rate of inflation, and instead advocate for permanent tax cuts.

Many state legislators and governors are proposing sales tax cuts, property tax relief, and a decrease or suspension of state gas taxes.

The suggestions come at a time when several states are sitting on a pile of federal pandemic money worth billions of dollars.

According to Mark Brewer, a political science professor at the University of Maine, it's no surprise that the relief is being discussed during an election year.

“There's some real policy reason to do this," Brewer said. "But at the same time, it's also clear that this is an election year, and in an election year there are few things as popular as giving voters what voters see as free money from the state.”‘Yeah, I’ve never paid $4.50 for a gallon of gas.’”
