NASA's IXPE logged more than 140 hours on magnetar 1E 1547-5408; the telescope appears on a budget reductions list
NASA dates the observing window to March and April 2025. A SpacePolicyOnline budget report lists IXPE among missions receiving reductions and puts NICER on a line headed Out. House appropriators' astrophysics language names Chandra, Fermi and UVEX, not those two.

NASA's page NASA's IXPE Studies Magnetar records a quantity and a window. Scientists using the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer, the page states, "conducted more than 140 hours of observations of the magnetar 1E 1547-5408" between March and April 2025. The illustration on that page is dated by NASA itself: it is "shown in this Aug. 5, 2026, artist's concept." NASA describes magnetars as neutron stars whose magnetic fields are the strongest of any object in the observable universe, roughly a trillion times what the strongest permanent magnets built on Earth produce.
The same telescope is named on a budget reductions list in SpacePolicyOnline's report NASA Copes with Details of $6 Billion Budget Cut, Leadership Uncertainty. That is the record this piece sets side by side.
What the science page says, and how firmly
NASA Science's page on the mission is headlined NASA's IXPE May Have Proven 90-Year-Old Theory. The hedge is in the headline's own verb, and it is in the text too. An unattributed first-person passage on the page says the model "suggests that reproducing the observed X-ray polarization signatures, while also satisfying the constraints set by radio observations, requires the presence of vacuum birefringence." Read plainly, that is a statement about a model, not a direct reading off an instrument: the modelled X-ray polarization pattern, held to the constraints that radio observations impose, is said to need the effect in order to come out right. The excerpt available here does not name who wrote or spoke the sentence, and does not spell out the physics beyond it.
Mirage News republished the material. Its version of the second passage reads: "The information we obtained from looking at this distant star core also gives us clues about the nature of the fabric of reality as we know it." NASA Science's version of that sentence runs on past that point, ending "and I find that to be incredible", and is preceded there by a further sentence about the interdisciplinary reach of astrophysics that the Mirage News excerpt does not carry. The quoted fragment matches; the passages do not. Neither excerpt names a speaker.
What the budget documents say
SpacePolicyOnline's report on the details of a $6 billion budget cut sorts astrophysics missions into groups. One line reads "Out: Chandra Space Telescope (x-ray), XRISM telescope (x-ray, with Japan), NICER, Swift". The report's word is Out. It does not use the word terminated, and the excerpt here does not define what the category means in budget terms. A second line records "reductions to TESS, IXPE, NuStar, Astrophysics Research, Supporting Research & Technology, and Science Activation". IXPE, the telescope in the magnetar result, is the second name on it. No percentage for IXPE appears anywhere in this file.
The Planetary Society's analysis of the FY 2027 NASA budget request puts a figure on the science account: "a disproportionate $3.4 billion would be taken from science activities, a decrease of 46% from the prior year." The same analysis states that "Research funding, the lifeblood of the scientific community...suffers cuts across the board." The ellipsis there is the source's own.
House appropriators moved the other way. SpacePolicyOnline's report House Appropriators Reject Deep Cuts to NASA in FY2027 states that, against $18.8 billion requested, "the committee approved $24.4 billion, the same as what the agency received for FY2026", and approved $6 billion for science against a $3.9 billion request, still $1.3 billion below the $7.3 billion of FY2026. This is a committee approving an amount at markup, not a law: nothing in this file records an enacted appropriation. The astrophysics language names programs one by one, including "continued support for Chandra, Fermi, and UVEX". Neither IXPE nor NICER is named there.
One name sits on both lists. Chandra appears on the Out line in the $6 billion cut report and among the programs the appropriations language continues support for. The excerpts date neither document, so the file shows two budget records of unestablished vintage that disagree about the same telescope.
The statements on the record
Two reports in this file carry statements from NASA's leadership, and in the excerpts available here neither report names the speaker in its text.
SpacePolicyOnline's report House Science Committee Opposes Cuts in NASA's FY2027 Budget Request carries the line "I wholeheartedly believe we need more flagship missions". It also carries "Cuts totaling $5.6 billion or 23% from the FY2026 enacted level is not wise", and two further statements. The excerpt attributes none of the four to a named person.
SpaceNews published written answers under a headline naming the NASA administrator nominee, Isaacman calls potential NASA science cuts not 'optimal'. The answers quoted there are the nominee's, given before any confirmation vote, and the excerpt fixes that position with its own conditional: the pledge begins "If confirmed, I will advocate for strong investment in space science" and continues into a list of fields that includes astrophysics. The same set of answers states that "a ~50% reduction to NASA's science budget does not appear to be an optimal outcome". Nothing in this excerpt establishes that he was confirmed, when he took office, or what party affiliation to give him; the only office it supports is nominee at the time of writing.
Analysis: what joins these documents, and what does not
These records are set side by side here because both are on the record, not because any source draws the link. The science coverage in this file never mentions a budget line; the budget coverage never mentions this result.
The numbers, at least, reconcile. The difference between the $24.4 billion the committee approved and the $18.8 billion requested is $5.6 billion, which is the same figure the House Science Committee report gives when it calls cuts of "$5.6 billion or 23% from the FY2026 enacted level" unwise. On the science account, $7.3 billion enacted against a $3.9 billion request is a $3.4 billion gap, which is the Planetary Society's $3.4 billion at 46%. Three documents from three publishers, one consistent set of arithmetic. That matters because it removes an easy out: the disagreement in this file is about priorities, not about whose subtraction is wrong.
What the file cannot settle is the flagship framing. The excerpts never state what mission class IXPE belongs to, so nothing here decides whether the magnetar result came from a flagship or from something smaller. What the excerpts do establish is narrower and checkable: the telescope named in the result is also named on a reductions list, a second instrument on the Out line is NICER, and the appropriations language that protects astrophysics programs by name protects Chandra, Fermi and UVEX and not these two.
On timing, NASA's page closes the observing window in April 2025 and assigns its artist's concept the date Aug. 5, 2026, about sixteen months later. That interval describes those two dated items and nothing else. The excerpts do not say when the underlying result was announced or published, so no general claim about lead time between observing and publication follows from it.
What the record does not settle
- Who spoke the quoted lines. The SpacePolicyOnline hearing excerpt and the SpaceNews excerpt both carry statements without naming a speaker in the text.
- Which budget request the Out and reductions lists belong to, and what date each carries. Chandra's appearance on both that list and the appropriations protection list points to documents from different stages.
- What the category Out means in budget terms. The report does not define it here.
- Whether NICER took part in this observation. NASA Science's excerpt refers only to constraints set by radio observations; nothing in this file places NICER, or any named ground telescope, in the magnetar campaign.
- The size of any proposed IXPE reduction. No figure for it appears in any excerpt.

A checkable prediction
Prediction: as of March 31, 2027, the astrophysics language in FY2027 NASA appropriations text - committee-reported or enacted - will still name specific missions for protection without naming either IXPE or NICER among them. The May 2026 committee language names Hubble, James Webb, Roman, LISA, Chandra, Fermi and UVEX; if a later version adds IXPE or NICER to that named list, this prediction is wrong.
