NASA page lists Roman Space Telescope launch for Aug. 30, 2026, while White House proposed canceling it
NASA's educational and mission pages list an Aug. 30, 2026 launch, while SpaceNews reported the White House 2026 budget proposal would cancel the telescope.
NASA's educational page for grades 5-8 said the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is scheduled to launch Aug. 30, 2026, aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket from Launch Complex 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The page said technicians completed the observatory on Nov. 25, 2025, by joining its inner and outer segments.
SpaceNews reported that the White House's 2026 budget proposal would cancel the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope while development remained on schedule for launch in late 2026. The outlet reported the telescope had been on budget and schedule for a launch in late 2026. Wikipedia's article on the telescope said an April 25, 2025, White House Office of Management and Budget plan listed Roman among missions potentially cancelled, but a May 31, 2025, revised budget did not include cancellation of Roman.
NASA's Roman mission page listed the launch time as 07:26 a.m. EDT on Aug. 30, 2026, and identified the launch vehicle and site. The page said Roman will have a field of view at least 100 times larger than Hubble's and is potentially capable of measuring light from a billion galaxies during its lifetime.
SpaceNews reported that NASA's next flagship space telescope is planned for late August, nine months ahead of schedule. The outlet reported that NASA officials said at a July 29 briefing they were working toward launch on Aug. 30. SpaceNews reported Shawn Domagal-Goldman, director of NASA's astrophysics division, said the team lived within its resources and is delivering nine months early.
