Three Falcons quarterbacks carry injury listings on Wednesday's report

Cooper Rush finished Week 1 with a passer rating of 51.9 in a 20-13 loss on the road at Pittsburgh. By the club's Sept. 16 injury report he was one of the two quarterbacks listed under Full Participation, and he carried a designation there too: Back.

The Falcons published that report on their own site, stamped Sep 16, 2026 at 03:51 PM, under the byline of Will McFadden, Senior Reporter. Three quarterbacks appear in it. Two of the three names under Full Participation are quarterbacks: QB Michael Penix Jr. (Knee) and QB Cooper Rush (Back); the third is CB Billy Bowman Jr. (Achilles). Under Did Not Participate: QB Tua Tagovailoa (Oblique), beside OG Chris Lindstrom (Concussion) and CB A.J. Terrell (Shoulder).

The claim being tested here sits in the same posting. Introduced there as head coach Kevin Stefanski on the quarterback situation, the answer reads: "I'd say we're working through it. I'm not ruling anyone out. Tua is not going to practice today, though he's getting better. Cooper and Mike will practice today, so we'll work through it." That is a Wednesday answer to a Wednesday question, days out from a Sunday game, and it shuts no door on any of the three quarterbacks the report lists. The question worth asking is what the underlying designations are worth as information. On this specific quarterback room, the Falcons have already published the answer.

What the club's own paperwork did five days earlier

On Friday, Sept. 11, the Falcons issued two documents in the same posting. The injury report listed eight players under Full Participation, among them QB Michael Penix Jr. (knee). The game report published that same Friday listed QB Michael Penix Jr. under Out, alongside QB Tua Tagovailoa, CB Billy Bowman Jr. and OT Cameron Williams. One man, one Friday, two club documents: full practice participant on one, unavailable on the other.

The posting also states plainly why Tagovailoa was there. He had been ruled out of Sunday's game against the Pittsburgh Steelers with an oblique injury, having not participated in Friday practice after being limited on Thursday. A companion explainer, dated Sep 11, 2026 at 02:12 PM, records that Rush would make the start and that Jack Strand would act as his backup, and that Stefanski confirmed there was no consideration or possibility of Penix being active that Sunday.

Neither secondary report in evidence here, NFL.com's or Sports Illustrated's, pairs those two Sept. 11 documents. Read together, they say something specific about Wednesday's report: a Full Participation line for this room has already, once, carried no weight at all for game-day availability. Penix practised fully on the Friday and was ruled out on the Friday. Whatever Wednesday's two full-participant quarterbacks mean, they are weaker evidence of who starts Sunday than the column heading makes them look. That is an inference from the documents, not a statement about anyone's intent. The club's own explainer supplies part of the reason for the Out: it records that the head coach said earlier that week "the plan was to keep Penix inactive this weekend".

The language has moved, slightly

On Sept. 11 the club's explainer recorded that Stefanski did not specify a duration but indicated the injury status was "day-to-day" or "week-to-week." On the same page he is quoted on Penix: "Mike will be ready when he is ready... I trust in this process and I trust in what we are doing medically and I trust Mike." By Wednesday, the formulation for Tagovailoa was that he is getting better, attached to a Did Not Participate line. Penix, meanwhile, had moved from Out on a game report to Full Participation on a practice report, and the explainer notes he told media on the Monday that he was not quite back to 100 percent.

The stakes are set by the one quarterback who did play. The club's own game breakdown, dated September 13, 2026, records the Week 1 numbers without adjectives.

The same breakdown records what the club calls "self-inflicted mistakes" - seven first-half penalties and a turnover margin of -1 - and, separately, Bijan Robinson with 29 touches for 173 scrimmage yards and kicker Nick Folk missing his first two field goal attempts as a Falcon. Stefanski's verdict on the penalties and turnovers, as the breakdown carries it: "Hard to win on the road when you do those things". Rush's career line, from the club's Sept. 11 explainer, is 16 starts, 61.1 percent completions, 3,766 yards, 20 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.

One designation on Wednesday's report has no earlier paper trail in this record. Rush appears with a Back injury; the club's Sept. 13 breakdown of the Pittsburgh game sets out his statline and the four times he was sacked with no injury mentioned. Sports Illustrated's On SI Falcons, bylined Darius Hayes, reports that Rush practised fully "despite a back injury sustained in Week 1's loss to Pittsburgh." The origin story is that outlet's characterization; the club's posting supplies the designation and nothing about when or how it happened. The same SI report describes three starters as sitting out and calls Lindstrom a right guard. The club's posting does label positions - OG Chris Lindstrom, CB A.J. Terrell - but applies no starter label to either man.

Secondary accounts also part company with the club on who the starter was. NFL.com, in a report bylined Nick Shook published before the opener, described Tagovailoa as day-to-day after aggravating his oblique at Thursday practice and referred to Penix as the starter ruled out for Week 1 with a knee injury. The club's Sept. 11 explainer says Tagovailoa had been named the team's starting quarterback for Week 1 of the 2026 season. This piece follows the club document. NFL.com's account also carried Rush's response to taking all the first-team repetitions at that practice: "I'm not sure what happened. It's Thursday practice. Practice has to go on, and so you're up next. We'll see what happens."

Strand, named in the Sept. 11 explainer as Rush's backup for the Pittsburgh game, carries no listing on either injury report reviewed here.

What resolves this is another club posting. Before the Pittsburgh game the Falcons published a game report on the Friday, with its Questionable and Out columns populated and Doubtful marked N/A. On the evidence of that pattern, a game report should appear before Sunday's game carrying a game-status designation for all three quarterbacks, and it is checkable against the Sept. 11 one by Sept. 21. The SI report's summary of the week - that the quarterback situation "remains unsettled heading into Sunday, with head coach Kevin Stefanski indicating that the team is still evaluating its options" - is a fair reading of Wednesday. The Friday document is where evaluating stops and designating starts.
